Getting out if the clasps of apple, i have moved to google's android platform in particular the motorola DROID RAZR.
Hardware wise the phone is great, it has awesome battery life, great screen quality, its light but feels sturdy and with its kevlar, steel and gorilla glass build it is definitely a premium device.
So whats wrong, well its android itself. Though i absolutely hate apples business practices, such you can't offer anything cheaper at another outlet if your in apple's development ecosystem. Which frankly i think is anti-competitive, due to the giant market share apple possesses, it pretty much shift market prices towards apples favor. The best example of this is the ebook market. Prior to ibooks l, ebooks were at low prices such as $3-5, ibooks launched, apple and publishers wanted higher prices and due to these broad market altering agreements prices of ebooks are now at $12.
Getting back on track, i want apple to have an ecosystem competitor, so they can't rob us, the consumers in broad daylight. Windows looks like a platform where developers and end users like (windows phone 7 and Windows 8) but its still in its infancy. So at present we are left with android as the only current competitor.
Android is great, with it being open source. We are able to get a multitude of phones, for every niche in the marketplace. But this same factor is androids akilles heel. With so many devices, with incredibly diverse hardware, from screen resolution and size to processor power and memory smaller developers are unable to write applications which work as intended. Thus applications are not as rich or enticing as the ios platform.
So what is the solution? It might be google, they could start a site where it lists the specifications for each google certified phone which is released and provide guides for better and easier development. Obviously manufacturers want this as well, as it means a potential of more phones to be sold with little investment.
Google could also go the microsoft windows 8 root, with newer phones requiring a set minimum of requirements to run the OS. But this is unlikely as androud is open source and this would go against that philosophy
Either way google needs ti support developers more either through more api's or guides. The ice cream sandwich UI is beautiful and functional, all google needs to worry now is the apps and fragmentatio.
