Netbooks you've been replaced

There is no longer any point to stop the inevitable, tablets/slates are the future, Netbooks you have been dumped. At the consumer electronic show you could be forgiven to think that the this year its just a tablet show. Every major manufacturer and some minor ones all have declared tablets and slates, all different sizes with or without keyboards and as usual most of them are running the android os while other are running windows 7. Now if your wondering "android on a tablet, that doesn't sound so good" or "hey isn't that OS made for smart phones, on a larger screen it'll look terrible and feel clunky" well Google has announced Android 3.0 honeycomb (got to the Android names) a version of the OS optimised for tablets and most if not all the Android tablets are running a dual core processor. well lets get stated the tablets announced and some of their specifications are listed below:
Motorola Xoom

The xoom the most coolest device to roll up this year at CES it has a 10.1 inch diagonal HD screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio at 1280 x 800 pixels running android 3.0. This tablet has the works font facing (3Mp) and back facing (5 Mp) cameras and the ability to capture 720p video, playback at 1080p and HDMI out. "At its heart beats" the 1ghz tegra 2 dual core processor and internal memory of 32Gb and the ability to upgrade the 3g antenna to 4g no wonder it is cnet's best of show.

ASUS eee pad memo
This is the run of the mill Android honeycomb tablet it has a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, a 7 inch capacitive display with stylus support, front facing (1.5Mp) and back facing (5Mp) cameras and HDMI out. This is a device is fairly basic with all the feature that you would expect for a tablet pricing has been announced at US$499 this is directly competing with the ipad for the moment this tablet has the edge, but for how long since the ipad 2 is rumored to come out within weeks.

ASUS eee slate EP121
The Asus eee slate EP121 is a full windows 7 computer in a slate body with a 12.1 inch 1200 x 800 Pixel display. It runs a core i5 processor with 4GB of ram and a choice of 32 or 64 GB of SSD storage. This the heavy weight in the tablet world, and i mean that literally weighing in at 1.16 Kg, it its fairly heavy for a tablet. This is the tablet if you want one of these types of devices just for productivity, since
it supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, a mini-HDMI port, flash card reader, 2x USB ports and 2MP webcam. You can run applications sich as MS office and microsoft has promised in a future update they would even more touch based accessibility. though since the guts of this tablet is so high end pre-order on Amazon is staring at USD$999, in my opinion you must have a pretty fat wallet and a dedication to windows if your thinking of buying this tablet.

ASUS eee Pad Transformer
Again we see Asus with their stupidly long names gah! anyway this is a standard android tablet with a twist as we can see the keyboard attachment which makes this device look a lot like a netbook. The Pad transformer is equipped with a 10.1 inch 1200 x 800 pixel IPS capacitive display, dual cameras (1.2Mp front and 5Mp back), Bluetooth, SD card reader and the hip new nvidia tegra 2 dual core processor running android 3.0 honeycomb. Asus claim that the transformer would have 16 hours battery life and priceing between USD$399-$699. On paper this seems like a good tablet due to the price and feature but as for any device without actually having a hands on its hard to say whether this is actually a good device.

ASUS eee Pad Slider
This is probably my favorite tablet design to date, Asus Slider has the same guts as the transformer. 10.1 inch 1200 x 800 pixel IPS capacitive display, dual cameras (1.2Mp front and 5Mp back), Bluetooth, SD card reader and nvidia tegra 2 dual core processor running android 3.0 honeycomb. But the difference is a full slide out qwerty keyboard, if anyone has used an onscreen keyboard they know how annoying it is to type anything, this design solves the problem as well as being pretty attractive. Pricing starts on the slider at USD$499 - $799.

Sharp Galapogas E-media

The Galapogas tablet is unique for tablets since its running sharps own Linux distribution available in 5.5 and 10.8 inch displays with aspect ratio of 16:9. In the Japanese market this device is primary made for reading, its like a nook colour, you have a web browser and a media player that's just about it. but there is a saying that what goes down in japan stays in japan and certainly that might the case as we might see android running on these two devices when it comes to the western market.

Toshiba Tablet
The Toshiba tablet is a 10.1 inch HD capacitive touchscreen tablet running Android 3.0 honeycomb, it has most of the usual features for tablets shown at CES 2011 such a Tegra 2 dual core processor, Forward facing (1.5 Mp) and Back facing (5Mp) cameras, HDMI out, USB in/out, WiFi B/G/N, 1080p playback etc. The Toshiba tablet is different from other tablets by have a soft touch back and even though its not the thinnest or the lightest of tablets its the most sturdy. This is expected from Toshiba since all the laptops which they make are usually quite chunky.

Samsung TX100

The Tx100 is a 10.1 inch windows 7 tablet but the difference from other tablets is the qwerty keyboard which slide out and then the display tilts, so what do you get a netbook. From what we are seeing, it looks like manufacturers are not as comfortable with windows 7 tablets as they are with Android ones. The hardware is standard netbook stuff, such as the atom processor 2GB ram the only difference is that samsung is offering the tablet in only SSD storage 32GB or 64GB. Samsung has stated that there will be an app environment and they will make the software more tablet/touch friendly, what does this mean? Crapware like the stuff HP puts in there laptops.

Panasonic Viera Tablet
The Panasonic viera tablet is a lounge room tablet, it offers a range of cloud based services for entertainment in conjunction with your viera television, so this could be viera cast in the palm of your hands. No hardware or software specifications have been announced but from the display model we can expect this to be a bastardised version of android (look at the buttons), Panasonic has announced that the tablet would be available in a variety if sizes from 4-10 inches.

iPad review

The iPad is apples new tablet device, I can't help but call it a giant iPod touch since it's runs the same operating system software and is aesthetics are a dead give away. But this is defiantly a new device, with apps taking full advantage of all the new screen real-estate making this a totally new experience. Though some apps are just bigger versions of the original iPod/iPhone apps and the use of the pixel doubler showcased by Steve jobs is terrible, as iPod/iPhone apps are pixelated and in some cases writing is unreadable. The LCD IPS display just pops and photo's movies and everything else looks awesome. The lack of a key features such as a camera, HDMI output, USB port and a SD card slot reduces the functionality of the iPad greatly when compared with other net books, which is the market that the iPad is competing for, though there is a camera connection kit for about another $50 but it still is an extra. when comparing the iPad to other e-readers such as the amazon k

Nokia Lumia 800

Nokia Lumia 800 Recently I had said that I bought the Motorola Razr, because it was a incredibly powerful phone in a tiny but rugged body. But a couple of weeks ago, while using the phone to navigate. It slipped out of my hands and fell on the hard paved ground. Initially it looked like it survived its ordeal by landing on its Kevlar lined back. Some scuffs were on the phone but were mainly negligible, but the real damage showed itself the the next day when I went to charge it. The phones internals were badly damaged, it would no longer take a charge. Seeing that I had a ruined phone, and one which probably would not be covered by warranty, I went looking for a cheap replacement smartphone. What I came across was the best mobile phone which I had ever used. That is the Nokia lumia 800, it truly is amazing device, with its design coming from the gorgeous N9 and the operating system from Microsoft (aka windows phone 7.5 mango), it has the best of both worlds

Apple fail: Maps

--> New Apple Maps Logo Old Google Maps logo Google maps was brutally axed from the iOS platform during the latest iteration of the operating system, as usual there is huge resistance from iOS users, since google maps was a better option to what is currently being provided by Apple maps. While Apple maps are generally fine, with mapping data provided by tomtom and open street map, they lack street view, public transport locations and accurate POI data. To compensate for this short fall Apple has provided turn-by-turn navigation and unique 3d feature called flyover. while the turn-by-turn navigation is a critical feature which was missing from Apple's mobile platform, I'd much rather have street view than the terrible flyover feature which makes roads and bridges looks like roller-coasters and buildings look like sausages emerging from the earth. Another massive error on Apple's part is the launch of incorrect maps where entire cities are either
